A Perfect Family Walk: Langden Brook Valley, Forest of Bowland, Lancashire

Published by Mark Lane, Founder

If you're looking for a walk that’s gentle enough for little legs yet scenic enough to give everyone something to enjoy, the Langden Brook Valley walk in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire is ideal. This route combines riverside paths, valleys, wide views, and a manageable length—making it perfect for families and walkers of all experience levels.

Route Overview & Trail Time

  • Distance: ~3.8-4 miles (6-6.5 km), depending on which variation you take.

  • Duration: Around 2 to 2.5 hours at a relaxed, family pace (with stops for nature, rest, snacks, etc.).

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Mostly level or gentle slopes along the brook; a short steeper section if you choose to add a circular version. Surface is firm for much of it; may get muddy in wet weather.

Access & Getting There

  • Start Point: The walk begins from Langden Brook Car Park, in the heart of the Forest of Bowland, near the hamlets of Sykes and Hareden.

  • How to get there: The roads up through the Trough of Bowland are very scenic; while some stretches are narrow, they are generally manageable in a normal car. You’ll want to check maps / sat-nav / OS grid references, especially in winter when snow or ice may affect tiny roads.

  • Parking & facilities: The car park is clearly marked on maps. There are limited facilities—no big visitor centre, so bring water, snacks, and ensure you have suitable clothing / footwear.

What to Expect: Scenery & Highlights

  • Riverside walking: Much of the walk follows Langden Brook itself. The sound of water, stepping stones or shallow fords (if dry), and woodland or valley sides create a calming, immersive natural walk.

  • Views: Open valley views, with rolling hills, moorland in distance, and often dramatic skies. On the circular version there’s a short climb which gives higher vantage points.

  • Wildlife & environment: Bowland is famous for its moorland, birdlife (waders, curlews, possibly golden plovers), riverside insects and plants. The diversity of landscape—from brook to fell to woodland—means lots of interest for children.

Tips for Families & All Weather

  • Footwear: Even in summer, parts may be muddy, slippery, or wet. Waterproof shoes or boots with decent grip are a good idea.

  • Weather preparation: Bring layers—windproof / waterproof outer layer. Bowland weather can shift quickly; the valley may be sheltered, but slopes can catch wind.

  • Children / pacing: Plan for plenty of stops: for views, snacks, playing by the brook. If kids are young, allow extra time.

  • Safety: Stick to paths, watch out for sudden changes in weather, have a map or GPS. If vague paths or forks, follow signposts or reliable maps.

  • When help is not nearby: Always tell someone where you’re going and what time you expect to return. Carry a small first aid kit, a charged phone, water, and extra clothes.

Fun Facts & Local Colour

  • Forest of Bowland is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is prized for its moorland, its rivers, valleys, and its relatively unspoiled rural character.

  • Langden Brook is a tributary of the River Hodder, and the valley is part of the Trough of Bowland—one of the quiet, wild-feeling corners of Lancashire.

  • On clear days, you can see quite far from some vantage points—Bowland often gives wide panoramic views, especially when climbing slightly above the valley bottom.
