Arthur’s Seat: Edinburgh’s City Summit for Families

Published by Mark Lane, Founder — Ocio Montaña

Arthur’s Seat sits right in the heart of Edinburgh and offers one of Britain’s easiest “summit” experiences — perfect for families who want dramatic views without a long drive. The extinct volcano in Holyrood Park gives panoramic city and coastal vistas and can be climbed in about 1–2 hours depending on route and breaks. Many families take the gentler Dunsapie or Red Route to the top and back, which are well-trodden and obvious underfoot.

Start at Holyrood Park (near the Palace of Holyroodhouse) and choose a route to suit your family: steeper routes are quicker but involve short scrambles; gentler routes are longer but far easier for small legs. The summit is only 251 m high but feels much bigger thanks to the exposed ridge and rock tors.

What to expect: varied terrain — grassy paths, rocky scrambles and firm trails. The ascent is manageable for older children and those used to short uphill walks; toddlers may be carried part-way. Bring windproof layers and good footwear — the ridge can be exposed and wind chill noticeable.

Practical tips: Holyrood Park has convenient public transport links and on-street parking nearby. Take water and a picnic; the summit is a superb place to pause. In poor visibility stick to the main waymarked paths and avoid cliff edges.

Why it works: the combination of short duration, dramatic payoff (panoramic vistas), and urban access makes Arthur’s Seat a unique family walk — an easy “mountain” day without leaving the city.
