Wepre Park: The Ideal Family Walk in North Wales

Published by Mark Lane, Founder — Ocio Montaña

If you want a walk that combines woodland, history, and easy, accessible trails for all ages, Wepre Park in Flintshire is hard to beat. Nestled on 160 acres near Connah’s Quay, this park offers a wonderful mix of natural beauty, heritage sites, and amenities—great for families, dog walkers, and those new to hiking.

Route Overview & Trail Time

One of the most popular walks here is the Ewloe Castle & Wepre Woods walk, which is around 3 miles (~5 km) and takes approximately 60 minutes at a relaxed pace.

If you prefer something shorter, there are woodland strolls and paths around the visitor centre, streams, the waterfall, and brook paths. One “easy ramble” route is about 3.86 km with modest ascent (~64m) and is labelled “very easy”.

Most visitors taking a casual walk (to the waterfall, playground, or through woodland) spend 1-2 hours, depending on how far they wander.

Access & Facilities

  • Location & Parking: Wepre Park is located off Wepre Drive, Connah’s Quay, CH5 4HL. Free parking is available at the main car park.

  • Opening Hours: The park is open 24 hours to pedestrians. Vehicular access (car park) is dawn-to-dusk. Visitor Centre hours vary; often open mornings and weekends.

  • Facilities: The park has a Visitor Centre with a café, toilets, children’s play area, outdoor gym, football pitches, skate park, well-managed fishing pond (Rosie pool), picnic areas, and multiple footpaths through woodland, grassland, streams, ponds and brooks.

What You’ll See & Interesting Facts

  • Ewloe Castle: These are romantic ruins of a 13th-century castle. The walk through woods to the castle is very scenic and gives a sense of history and atmosphere.

  • Waterfall & Brook Walks: Wepre Brook and New Inn Brook meander through the park. The waterfall is only a few minutes from the car park and is a highlight—especially for younger walkers.

  • Ancient Woodland & Red Rocks: The park is part ancient semi-natural woodland, with ponds, wetlands, and varied habitats. One striking geological feature is the red sandstone (“red rocks”) used in the construction of Ewloe Castle, with visible bands and outcrops.

  • Wildlife & Biodiversity: As part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Wepre supports protected species such as the great crested newt, badgers, various flora in ponds and wetlands, and woodland birds.

Best Practice & Tips for Families

  • Wear good footwear: Paths are generally good, but after rain they can be muddy, especially near streams, waterfalls, or woodland floor.

  • Bring waterproofs and layers: Weather in North Wales can change quickly; cover up for rain and wind especially under tree cover.

  • Start early on busy days: Particularly in school holidays or weekends, parking fills up and paths get busy. Early arrival gives space and peace.

  • Plan for stops: The play area, café, castle ruins, and brook areas make excellent rest or lunch spots. Children often enjoy shorter explorable detours.

Why Wepre Park is Perfect for a Family Day Out

Wepre Park offers a wonderfully balanced walk: enough distance for a satisfying stroll (~1-3 miles depending on route), history and nature to keep all ages interested, and amenities to support comfort and convenience. It’s gently challenging in parts (some steeper path/stairs near Ewloe Castle), but no part is overly demanding. For families, it’s a chance to enjoy woodland, water features, castle ruins, playground fun—and all without travelling far or needing specialist gear.

Explore without limits!
