Tarn Hows Circular: Lake District Family Walk

Published by Mark Lane, Founder — Ocio Montaña

Tarn Hows is a small, picture-perfect tarn and one of the Lake District’s easiest, most rewarding family walks. It’s ideal for strollers, small children and older family members who want a scenic, low-effort outdoor day.

The route is a compact 2-mile (≈3.2 km) circular path on a firm, well-maintained gravel surface with benches, viewpoints and gentle undulations — most families walk it in about 60–90 minutes, allowing time to pause for photos, snacks and the kids to explore. The National Trust notes the path is accessible for pushchairs and mobility scooters on the main loop, although some small linking paths may be steeper or rougher.

Start at the Tarn Hows car park (National Trust) near Coniston and follow the signed circuit that hugs the water’s edge. The walk is compact and obvious: the trail circles the tarn, giving continuous water views broken by stands of Scots pine and birch. The reflections on calm mornings are superb and make great picnic spots. In wetter months some sections become muddy at the margins—sturdy footwear is advised—but the main loop remains manageable for most families.

What kids love: rock-hopping at the water’s edge, short wildlife moments, and the small waterfalls you can detour to off the main track. For pushchairs: plan your route via the surfaced, flatter sections and avoid narrower side trails.

Practical tips: National Trust car parking charges may apply unless you are a member. Arrive earlier on summer weekends for easier parking. Take layers — weather changes quickly in the Lakes — and bring snacks; there’s plenty of space for a grassy picnic.

Why it works for families: short distance, easy navigation, accessible surface, superb scenery and a low-risk environment. It’s the kind of walk that introduces children gently to hill country without demanding fitness or technical skills, while still satisfying adults with beautiful Lake District views.
