Family-Friendly Adventure: The Mam Tor & Great Ridge Walk

Published by Mark Lane, Founder — Ocio Montaña

For families looking to take their love of the outdoors to new heights, the Mam Tor and Great Ridge walk offers one of the most rewarding and scenic experiences in the Peak District National Park. Known as the “Shivering Mountain,” Mam Tor delivers incredible 360° views, gentle gradients, and a well-marked trail suitable for families, beginners, and anyone eager to enjoy one of Britain’s most iconic ridgelines.

The Route at a Glance

  • Location: Near Castleton and Edale, Peak District

  • Distance: Approx. 3 miles (4.8 km) circular route

  • Time: 1.5 to 2 hours

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate (short ascent, safe for children)

  • Start Point: Mam Nick National Trust Car Park (S33 8WA)

  • Terrain: Stone-paved paths, grassy ridges, and well-trodden trails

The Mam Tor Circular Walk begins at the National Trust car park at Mam Nick, a short drive from the picturesque village of Castleton. From the start, the trail climbs gently toward the summit of Mam Tor at 517 metres above sea level — a short ascent that rewards you with commanding views across the Edale Valley, Kinder Scout plateau, and the Hope Valley below.

Once you’ve reached the trig point at the summit, the route follows the Great Ridge, an undulating trail connecting Mam Tor with Hollins Cross and Lose Hill. This section is often described as one of the most beautiful ridges in England — with views that seem to stretch forever.

Accessibility and Facilities

Mam Nick Car Park (National Trust) offers convenient access, with toilets and refreshment stops available in nearby Castleton or Edale village. The route is suitable for families with older children, and while the stone paths make it easy to follow, it’s worth noting that pushchairs are not recommended due to uneven terrain and steep edges in sections.

Dogs are welcome on leads, and the open ridges provide plenty of space for safe exploration.

Highlights Along the Way

The views from the top of Mam Tor are simply breathtaking — and they change with every season. On clear days, you can see as far as Manchester and the hills of Snowdonia in Wales. The summit’s name, meaning “Mother Hill,” comes from its many ancient landslides that have formed smaller “daughter” hills below.

Along the ridge, look out for the remnants of the Iron Age hillfort that once stood here over 3,000 years ago — a fascinating slice of history nestled in the landscape. The walk also offers perfect photo opportunities, especially at sunrise or sunset, when the rolling hills are painted in gold.

Safety and Best Practice

Even though this is a relatively short and safe walk, weather in the Peak District can change quickly, especially at higher altitudes. Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and plenty of water. The ridge can be windy, so make sure children are supervised near exposed sections.

If visibility drops, follow the stone path markers and avoid venturing too close to the edges. A small first-aid kit, snacks, and a charged phone with offline maps are always good to have on hand.

Why Mam Tor is Perfect for Families

The Mam Tor & Great Ridge walk strikes a rare balance — it’s short enough for young hikers yet dramatic enough to feel like a true adventure. With a clear path, rewarding summit views, and plenty of history underfoot, it’s one of the best family hikes in the Peak District for all experience levels.

Whether you’re introducing your children to hillwalking or seeking a peaceful outdoor escape, Mam Tor offers everything: beauty, accessibility, and the unforgettable experience of standing atop one of Britain’s most loved mountains.
